Goodfellas is a Hollywood film of the year 1990. It is directed by none other than Martin Scorsese. The genre of this film is Crime & the total runtime of this movie is 145 minutes. Goodfellas is a critically acclaimed movie and also a commercial success. The film’s total budget was $25 million, and it grossed $46.8 million at the box office.
Goodfellas is based on the book Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi. It tells the story of mob associate Henry Hill and his family & friends. The movie is set around 1955-1980, narrating Henry Hill and associates’ rise and fall.
Where to start, when you talk about the cast of this movie! Firstly, there’s Robert Di Nero as Jimmy Conway, Ray Liotta as Henry Hill, Joe Pesci as Tommy DeVito, Lorraine Bracco as Karen Hill & Paul Servino as Paul Cicero(Paulie)! Other notable characters include Frank Sivero, Frank Vincent & Tony Darrow.
I think Martin Scorsese is one of the best directors Hollywood could have! I mean, his every Crime film is a masterpiece. Goodfellas is considered one of the best Martin Scorsese movies ever! The dialogues especially are the best part. In this movie, the screenplay is done by Nicholas Pillegi, and it was amazing! Both of them have won awards for their work at different film festivals. Some of them are:-
- New York Film Critics Circle Award- Best Director
- British Academy Film Award- Best Director
- Boston Society of Film Critics Award- Best Director
- Venice Film Festival- Audience Award
And many more…
I loved the performance of Joe Pesci the most, because of his character, Tommy DeVito. Tommy is a funny but extremely serious gangster! And who could forget that “I’m funny how? I mean funny like I’m a clown?” conversation—one of my favorite scenes in the movie. Then there’s Robert Di Nero, Ray Liotta & Lorraine! I couldn’t find a single flaw in their acting. Extremely good, I must say!
One of the best things about Scorsese movies is the dialogues and the story. Firstly he chooses the best story, then the best actors and then those fantastic dialogues! Crime is his genre, and watching Scorsese Crime movies is like an experience, which is hard to forget.
I also loved how the story moves forward, and then there are ups and downs, which are shown in great detail. This movie is a little bit slow at the start, but I feel that it’s necessary to build the story. Every character’s transformation is shown beautifully, especially Henry Hill.
Joe Pesci won many awards for his role. Some of them are:-
- Best Supporting Actor:-Academy Award
- Best Supporting Actor:-National Board Of Review Award
- Best Supporting Actor:-Chicago Fim Critics Association Award
Robert Di Nero won Best Actor Award at British Academy Film Award & New York Film Critics Circle Award.
Lorraine Braco won the Best Supporting Actress Award at Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award & Chicago Film Critics Association Award.
I would go with critics and would agree on the fact that Goodfellas is one of the best Crime movies ever made. About ratings, I would rate this movie a 9 out of 10. Goodfellas is definitely worth a watch, and I would wholeheartedly recommend this flick.
