So, how do I waste the most time every day?
It’s a question I have an answer for, but I won’t readily accept if someone tries to hold me accountable.
I’m sorry, but that’s just the way it is.
I think most of my time gets “lapsed.”
What do I mean by lapsed? Well, for example, I’ll be working on my laptop with, let’s say, three tasks at hand.
These are tasks that, with just 45 minutes of focused effort, could easily be completed.
But in reality, how much time do I take? Around two to two and a half hours.
Most of the time, I’m just getting deviated from the actual task.
I find myself doing other things like searching for the perfect focus music, updating my system (I’m on Linux, by the way), or researching things only to come back to the very same point I started from.
This exact thing happened to me today.
I was writing a post for LinkedIn and wrote a rough draft. Then I thought I would improve it using ChatGPT and spent an hour perfecting the prompt.
Guess what I posted in the end?
The same rough draft I wrote initially.
And let’s not forget the quick “glances” at Instagram and YouTube, which usually end up stealing half an hour of my “allotted” time.
Basically, it’s the things I do in between the things I am supposed to do.
It’s a similar story when I’m on my phone.
There are two scenarios. One is for genuine entertainment, like when I’m actually enjoying a show or series I’m watching.
The other is when my brain just goes numb.
I find myself opening and closing WhatsApp ten times a day, only to find zero new messages.
Or I’m switching between Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, only to realize I don’t even remember the last video I watched.
All this time, I put under the “lapsed” tab – when I’m doing things but don’t know the reason I’m doing them.
And this is where I waste most of my day.
