Never Let Me Go is definitely slow in the start but the ending will leave you mesmerised |

The genre of this novel is still debatable. Many people would read this novel as science fiction, and they will be disappointed, in my view. I think the genre of this novel is literary fiction at it’s best. This novel was released in the year 2005, and the name of the author is Kazuo Ishiguro. Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel,’The Remains Of the Day’, is another real masterpiece which won Man Booker prize in 1989. This novel too was shortlisted for Man Booker Prize in the year 2005.

Kathy is the protagonist and narrator of the novel. The story is set in Hailsham school where Kathy and her two friends-Ruth and Tommy grew up. In Hailsham, every student is well taken care of and also trained in various fields like art and literature. The only thing that is kept a secret from all the students is about the outside world. They are allowed minimal permissible contact with the outer world. Good habits are inculcated in them since childhood, and bad habits like smoking are considered taboo and are equivalent to committing a crime. The story revolves around the three main characters as they grew up together and find out what Hailsham was really about?

The thing I like about Sir Kazuo’s writing is he builds the character in a lovely way. The details in his book are unmatchable, and one can easily create a mental picture of the story while reading it. This novel is like a mystery, there are questions and some incidents in this story which are not understandable in the beginning. But as the story moves forward, all the dots are connected, and finally, I realized how beautiful this novel was.

The only thing that I found slightly disappointing was at some point the details were too much. It was like, getting tiresome to read it. At points, I felt like I am having some unnecessary conversation with the protagonist itself. Some impatient readers may have stopped reading it in between too. But, thankfully, I didn’t. And I can assure you, the end is gratifying. It is not that boring in the middle, it’s just the story moves very slowly in some parts.

I cannot describe my favorite part here as it will reveal the whole plot. Although I can praise the ending because I really want to. This novel was by far the best ending I have ever read in fiction. I have rated this novel 5 out of 5, wherever I could. It starts slowly, but the end is worth it. One important thing I want to tell you is, before reading this novel, do not consider the negative reviews about it. Just read it, then decide for yourself, whether it was worth it or not? Another good reason for reading this novel is Kazuo Ishiguro won the Nobel Prize in Literature in the year 2017. So, please have some patience in between; otherwise, you will regret not reading such a masterpiece.
