Tamasha is the feat of Imtiaz Ali Storytelling abilities

‘Tamasha’ is a 2015 Bollywood Romance film written and directed by Imtiaz Ali. It was released on 27 November 2015. The movie is very long, with a total runtime of 174 minutes. Despite this, ‘Tamasha’ was a commercial success earning Rs 136 crore(est.) against its budget of Rs 60 crore.

Tamasha tells the story of Ved Vardhan Sahni, aka Don, in the movie. The story is narrated in 3 different Ved’s life stages- a nine-year-old, a nineteen-year-old, and a thirty-year-old adult. Tamasha is based on the idea,’ Why always the same story?’. The movie beautifully shows how everyone around is moving in a set pattern and is always afraid of breaking the pattern.

The movie is based on the life of Ved Vardhan Sahni, which is played by Ranbir Kapoor. Ranbir has the majority of the screen time, and why not? Ved meets Tara Maheshwari, played by Deepika Padukone, during his holidays in Corsica. This is where the story starts! These two are the lead actors, and the majority of screen-time is shared by both of them. Other notable cast member includes Javed Sheikh as Ved’s father & Yash Sehgal as the younger version of Ved.

Tamasha is a very long movie, but somehow due to decent direction, it is watchable! I didn’t feel like leaving it in between. But it could have been way better. I liked the most about Imtiaz Ali’s direction because he chose to shoot the movie. All the locations were just fantastic, and Corsica was breathtaking! After watching this movie, I have made a plan to go to Corsica one day. Also, I would like to applaud the work of Cinematographer Ravi Varman.

I remember a scene from the movie where Deepika is standing on the edge of a boat, and the boat crosses a bridge. That single shot describes Ravi Varman’s cinematography skills! I paused the movie and took some time to watch the shot again & again!

Personally, I love the combination of Ranbir & Deepika. There’s some sort of chemistry in it. Both have done 3 movies together, and I liked 2 of them. Their last movie,’ Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’  is good too and is of the same genre-Romance.

About this movie, I just loved the acting of Ranbir & Deepika. There is depth & emotion, which is the utmost required for any romantic-drama movie. Although the plot is a little bit twisted, the shifts from the younger version to the older version of Ved’s life are persistent. This somehow makes the story complex.

The songs are just great and very emotional, especially’ Agar Tum Saath Ho‘! The scene which leads to this song is heartbreaking and shows the raw emotions of the characters.

I also loved the idea behind the movie. It gives us a lesson to break the standard pattern that everyone follows and do something you have always thought of doing. Listen to your heart because,’ Why always the same story?’

I think ‘Tamasha‘ is an excellent re-watchable movie! What makes it re-watchable is its different story, good acting, and beautiful cinematography! Coming to the ratings, I would rate this movie 7 out of 10 and would definitely recommend watching it.
