Badhaai Ho is an Indian comedy-drama film of the year 2018, directed by Amit Sharma. The movie stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Sanya Malhotra, Neena Gupta, and others. The budget of the movie was around 4 crore INR & it’s earning were Rs 221 crore. It was a massive hit.
This movie has a very different plot as compared to various other Indian films. This is one of the biggest reasons for it becoming a massive hit. This story is of a typical middle-class Indian family consisting of 5 members, husband(Jeetender Kaushik), wife(Priyamvada), elder son(Nakul Kaushik), younger son(Gullar) and Jeetender’s mother, Durga.
Nakul is a 25 years old working guy and is also in a relationship with his office colleague, Renee. Nakul’s mother is a housewife. Her mother-in-law always argues with her on every other topic. She also dominates her son and wants his son to favor her every time, instead of his wife.
One day, she taunts Priyamvada over something, and this time Priyamvada gets upset. Jeetender console her, and suddenly a romantic moment is created between them, and they both get intimate. And, after 19 weeks of this incident, Priyamvada realizes she is pregnant.
It is not acceptable in Indian Society that a couple who already have a 25-year-old son, to give birth to another baby. When Nakul and Gullar heard about the news, they felt very embarrassed by seeing their parents. Gullar’s school friends tease him, and Nakul is speechless and doesn’t know how he will tell people about this, especially Renee. He even stops going to the office for a few days.
The story moves forward, and now the whole family gets an invitation to Nakul’s cousin sister’s wedding. Nakul and Gullar decide to not go there because of the fear of what people will think about them?’. He also talks rudely to his father. He just can’t accept that,’ his parents can have sex at this age”.
Here in Meerut, relatives talk harshly to Priyamvada about her late pregnancy. And seeing this, her mother-in-law defends her and gives the relatives a befitting reply, one that makes one of them cry! Nakul realizes after the school incident of Gullar and his abusing friends that he has been too harsh on his parents. His parents needed him the most, and what he was doing, he was running away from them.
Therefore he realizes his mistake and fulfills his duty as a son by helping her mother on routine checkups and household chores. After a while, Priyamvada realizes that Nakul has broken up with Renee, and she tells her son to go and apologize to Renee’s mother.
Now, as the baby shower preparation begins, Priyamvada goes into labor and is rushed to the hospital. Here, Renee’s mother tells her daughter about Nakul’s apology, and also that she accept the relationship between the two. Hearing this, Renee rushes to Nakul’s house, and when she didn’t find him there, she asks the neighbors and then heads directly to the hospital. After the delivery, the doctor says,’ Badhaai Ho, ladki hui hai,’ which means Congratulations, a girl is born!
Indeed an entertaining movie, full of comedy and a lesson. It shows the conservative mentality in Indian Society, which cannot accept the fact that a couple can bear a child at that age. In India, people talk and look into other’s matters more than their own. Anything which is not according to the rules of Indian Society becomes a gossip material.
A refreshing movie, something new from the same old action and romantic-comedy films. I would rate it 8 out of 10 for the plot, acting, and the proper amount of humor and a social message in it. Do watch it, you will not regret it!
