How Do I Want to Retire?

how do i want to retire

Honestly? I don’t know.

I’m not really thinking about retirement or the distant future right now. I’m just trying to live in the present, day by day.

But if I had to answer, I’d rather talk about what brings me peace now.

Because if something gives me peace today, maybe it will still bring me peace in the future.

When it comes to “home,” nothing feels more right than my family home in my small town.

I’ve lived in different places for different stretches of time, but none of them gave me the kind of peace this place does.

It’s the only place I can truly call home. It’s seen my childhood, my youth, and hopefully, it’ll see my old age too, if I get there.

Then there’s passion.

I believe even after retirement, you need something that keeps you going. Something that makes you feel alive.

For me, that’s writing.

Writing whatever I feel – anger, frustration, happiness, sadness. Just letting it all out. It’s the one thing I’d like to carry with me into old age.

Talking about family, I’m not so sure.

Right now, I don’t really believe in the idea of marriage.

But I do understand the importance of having a partner in life. Someone to share the silence and the noise with.

Friends? I don’t think my parents will be around by then. That’s the reality.

But I’d love to stay close to my siblings and the friends I have now.

I know people drift apart with time, but I hope I have at least a small circle left.

People I can sit with and talk about the good old days, even if it’s just once or twice a year.

And yes, decent money.

I procrastinate a lot now, so I can’t imagine working hard at the age of 65.

I don’t want to be struggling to afford food or begging someone to take care of me.

And when I reread all of this, I noticed one thing.

We always want the best. I want everything to stay good and positive.

But reality?

Maybe I won’t get any of it. Maybe I’ll get all of it (chances are slim though)

And even if I do get everything I dream of, I’ll probably still want more.

Because that’s how humans are. Always craving more. More peace. More love. More time.

Maybe I’ll end up as an old hag, grumbling about life.

Or maybe I’ll be a happy old man, surrounded by family and friends, smiling at the life I’ve lived.

Of course, I’d prefer the second one. Who wouldn’t?

But honestly, I won’t complain if I get the first. Because old age is just a reflection of how we lived our lives.

So yeah, live the present in a good way.

Live it in a way that feels right to you. Then maybe you won’t have to worry too much about retirement.

And who knows – maybe we don’t even reach retirement, yeah?

That’s why today counts.
