Music is something that keeps changing for me, especially when I say I like it.
Back in childhood, my only source of music was the limited cassette collection my father owned and the weekly show Rangoli on DD National.
Oh, and how could I forget FM radio?
Though, the thing with FM was – you couldn’t really choose what to listen to.
Not that I even knew I had choices back then.
And I always wondered – how are people calling FM stations and requesting songs? I mean, calls were pretty expensive in those days.
Then came 8th standard.
My father bought a phone, and that’s when the real journey began – the journey of downloading songs.
That’s when I discovered Bollywood music. The OG 2000s and 2010s playlist – KK, Mohit Chauhan.
Pure melody. I loved it then, and honestly, I still do.
I remember going to these ‘Mobile Downloading Shops’ where you could fill-up your memory card with latest songs for Rs 50.
I used to make notes of what songs I wanted and then spend hours at that shop getting those specific songs.
I have spent good money on this activity 🙂
Later, I got influenced by English hip-hop and rap.
Thanks to the girls in my class, I started listening to Akon and Enrique Iglesias. (Yeah, that was a phase.)
By the time I reached 10th, I had moved on to heavy metal.
Bon Jovi, Metallica – that kind of stuff. It was loud, intense, and somehow, it made sense at the time.
Then came college.
That’s when I really got exposed to English music in all its forms. I started listening to everything – pop, reggae, electronic, hip-hop, rap, acoustic… you name it.
I even developed this habit of downloading songs in FLAC format. High-res audio. I was obsessed.
I remember having 3-4 songs that were 300 MB each. My phone had a music folder that crossed 10 GB. And my laptop? Around 25 GB of songs.
I’ve literally spent hundreds of hours creating, updating, and maintaining those playlists. All in FLAC. All high quality.
But slowly, that phase faded.
I moved to apps like YMusic, where you could stream songs for free. It was convenient.
Then I started earning a bit better and upgraded to a paid YouTube membership. And now, that’s my go-to music service.
The recommendations? Oh, they’re amazing. I can literally argue with anyone on this – YouTube Music gives the best song recommendations. Period.
These days, I’m more into spiritual music.
I listen to melodic bhakti songs and a few of my all-time favourites that I keep playing on loop.
But still, if you ask me what my favourite genre is – it’s melody. I don’t know if that’s an official genre, but I call it melody. Always have.
Thanks for reading!
