I Thought I Was a Hopeless Romantic…

I remember back in my college days, I was kinda obsessed with this phrase – hopeless romantic.

It sounded poetic, dreamy, and honestly, a little tragic. I didn’t know what it actually meant, but I liked the vibe of it.

Hopeless + romantic. Sounds nice, right?

In my head, it meant someone who thinks about romantic things but never actually experiences them. Like, they just dream about love but never find it – which makes them hopeless!

Turns out… I was completely wrong.

When I finally looked it up, I realised it meant almost the opposite of what I thought.

A hopeless romantic is someone who deeply believes in love – like love at first sight, soulmates, fairy tale endings, all of that.

And that’s not me.

I’m rational. I need logic in everything. If something doesn’t make sense, I struggle to accept it. So yeah, if there’s such a thing as a rational romantic, that would be me.

I did a quick Google search and Gemini gave me this definition:

A rational romantic is someone who approaches love and relationships with a combination of emotional connection and logical reasoning. They value both the passionate feelings of romance and the practical considerations of a healthy, sustainable partnership.

That’s exactly how I feel.

I even asked ChatGPT (yes, I admit it) – What would be the idea of romance for a rational romantic person? And the answer I got? I agreed with every single word.

Here’s what it said, and honestly, this is my kind of romance:

  • A quiet evening talk, a shared book, or a walk in nature means way more than a flashy gift.
  • Small things like writing a thoughtful note, cooking a meal together, or planning a trip while debating over silly things.
  • Realistic dreams and expectations.
  • Understanding timing, context, and consequences. Like, delaying a fight if the other person is already stressed.

And the best part? I’m willing to do the same. I don’t just expect these things and then act the opposite. I genuinely believe in mutual effort.

Reading this again, I’m starting to see why I was drawn to the phrase hopeless romantic in the first place.

Maybe it does suit me… the hopeless part 🙁
