What’s your go-to comfort food?

So, I had this doubt. Like, is comfort food something you eat when you’re sad? Or… is it something else?

I had to ask the internet. And, umm, sorry to break your feelings if you thought it was just that. It’s not exactly. I mean, it’s often related to that, but not exclusively.

Comfort food is more about nostalgia. It’s about something that reminds you of your past – childhood, youth, or just a certain phase of your life.

Like for me, in my first year of college, we were a bunch of guys living together in a flat. None of us knew how to cook, right?

So, we used to grab samosas and chaanch – buttermilk – for breakfast. I know, weird combo. But if I’m with the same guys again, I can totally eat that combo and it becomes my comfort food.

Because it reminds me of that time. That phase.

Comfort food always has some emotional memory attached to it. Like in the story I just told – it’s not just about the food, it’s about the story behind it.

And whenever I have that combo, I’m instantly taken back to those college days.

I actually have different comfort foods with different people.

With my mom, it’s aloo parathas on Sundays – like I described in another blog.

With my sister, it’s khichdi. That’s the one thing she used to cook really well back then.

With my father, it used to be chicken and scrambled eggs. Or Maggi on Thursdays. We had this little rule once – Maggi only on Thursdays. We followed it for a few months.

And when I was alone… I used to order chicken keema paratha with Coke. Then I’d watch a movie I’d already seen before.

Ahh, I remember the taste again… so good.
